Every day in the UK, 13 babies die shortly before, during or soon after birth.

Behind every statistic is a family whose world has changed forever. Pregnancy and baby loss can have a profound and lasting impact, affecting parents' mental health, relationships, identity and connection to the world around them. Yet it remains a subject many people find difficult to talk about, leaving families to navigate their grief, feeling isolated and alone.

At least one in six pregnancies ends in miscarriage, and around half of UK adults, either personally or through someone they know, have been affected. Longstanding inequalities mean that some communities face an even greater risk of loss, highlighting the need for accessible support and better outcomes for all families.

"As a grieving father I remember feeling very, very lonely. I went completely numb to the world. I couldn’t even cry. I thought oh gosh, I'm broken, something's wrong with me. At a Sands group in Nottingham I explained how I was feeling and another dad told me that he’d felt the same way for two years after losing his baby. Knowing somebody else had been through the same feelings as I had took away my anger and frustration and the feeling that I was the only dad who knew what this was like. Sands is the UK's leading pregnancy and baby loss charity.

We work to save babies' lives and ensure that everyone affected by pregnancy loss or the death of a baby receives the care and support they need, for as long as they need it.

Our work is driven by three core pillars that help reduce inequalities and create lasting change:

• Bereavement Support - providing free, accredited support tailored to the needs of individuals, families and communities.
• Improving Care - delivering specialist training, resources and guidance that help professionals provide compassionate, high-quality care.
• Saving Babies' Lives - supporting research, driving innovation and influencing policy to reduce the number of babies who die.
